E-safety is basically how to be safe on the internet. Are You Safe?
Social Networking websites allow people to connect and communicate with others. People use social networking to keep in touch with friends, family and to meet new people they haven’t met in the real world. Facebook, Instagram, snapchat, kik are a few examples.
You may also have heard about them in the news about child abusers making contact with people online or some people themselves using the sites to bully and target others. However, people can protect themselves and behave properly when using social networking sites – if they know how to.
I will be sharing some tips to be safe and what to do if you are targeted.
Each website is different. But most are similar and allow people to :-
CREATE AN ACCOUNT:-
Creating an account allows people of all ages to create a site about themselves. The page can contain information such as name, contact details, address and location, birthday, photos, likes and interests and also allows others to post or comment about themselves onto the page. Most teens have an account in one or the either social network. Teens love to post selfies of themselves, write about themselves but do we look into the unsafe side of this?
Some tips are:-
-Become familiar with the social networking site you are using, including how the privacy settings work, and set them up.
-Ask an adult for help to understand why it is important to keep personal information private and restricted to people they know and trust.
- Be aware that privacy settings can change so you should check them regularly.

MAKING FRIENDS:-
People think that having a lot of friends means you are very fashionable and famous. Being friends means that you can access each others profile information, comment on each others pictures and send each other messages. Some people, to show that they have more friends than each other add random people as friends. Here is the risk. How do you know if the person is friendly of not? I Just because you want to have more friends doesn't mean you add a random person as your friend. He/she could do anything with your profile and post any comments that might hurt you or hack into your account and send nasty messages to people very close to you.
Some tips are:-
- Do not 'friend' someone if you don't know that person
- If someone hacks into your account report or tell an adult about it
- If someone posts something nasty about you, report them or un-friend them Keep your privacy settings on so only you're friends can see your page.
SENDING MESSAGES:-
Most social sites allow people to talk to each other using the message system. This means that they can talk privately rather than on the main profile pages.
Some social networking sites also allow people to talk instantly with someone else. For eg: Messenger. This could help you share ideas and help others for homework and other things. But sometimes, people get cyber bullied which means "the use of electronic communication to bully a person, usually by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature."
Some tips are:-
-Talk to your parents about receiving messages from people you don't know or messages that make you feel hurt or distressed.
-Also remember that online messaging is just like writing a letter to someone and that once it is sent, you cannot take it back.
- Report images and messages and comments posted about you that make you embarrassed and hurt.
POSTING SELFIES !
Whenever we create a profile on a social networking site, we are allowed to add a profile picture of ourselves and on most sites you can create albums by adding or posting more than 100 pictures. Sometimes, in the privacy settings you can control who can see your pictures – public which means everyone or just friends.
Just be careful with what pictures you post cause once you post them they can never be removed.
Some tips are:-
-You can set rules about posting pictures – whether your child is allowed to do this or not.
-Talk again about how once something is posted onto the Internet, it could be there forever.
-Check the privacy settings so that they are set to the highest level for pictures.

VIRUSES, WORMS, TROJANS, KEYLOGGERS AND SPYWARE:-
Viruses and Worms, self-operate and hijack your operating system. They can be used to send out spam or perform other bad activities and you may not even know it. They can cause your computer to freeze or crash and will use shared files and email address books to spread viruses to other computers from yours.
A Trojan damages your operating system and may install a 'backdoor' through which to send your personal information to another computer for fraudulent purposes.
A Keylogger logs every keystroke you make and then sends that information, including all your personal information like: passwords, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc to scammers for fraudulent use.
Collects personal information or interferes with control of your computer, such as installing additional software or redirecting your web browser.
